Darling Quarter in Sydney’s harbourside is a seamless fusion of refined architecture and authentic sustainability. Anchored by two campus‑style office buildings housing a leading financial institution, this precinct raised the bar by achieving a full suite of 6‑Star Green Star ratings for design, as‑built, interiors, and operational performance, alongside a 5‑Star NABERS energy rating. This reflects a deep-rooted focus on environmental leadership from the outset.
The environmental impact speaks volumes: the development cuts greenhouse gas emissions by about 72%, sparing around 2,500 tonnes of CO₂ annually, while reducing potable water use by approximately 92% through advanced water-saving systems. Construction practices emphasised circularity, about 80% of on-site waste was diverted from landfill, and interiors feature low‑VOC materials, engineered timber, and products assessed for lifecycle and occupant wellbeing.
ARUP’s contributions to the project wove seamlessly into the sustainability narrative. By specifying tuneable white lighting in parts of the design, both visual adaptability and energy efficiency were supported. The Luxient downlight by ELS was thoughtfully reimagined as a surface-mounted variant, enhancing spatial cohesion. In collaboration with ARUP, Jadecross co-developed the ELS Flex downlight delivering a warm 3500K tone and flicker-free dimming with a CRI of 95 to meet Green Star standards while complementing natural daylight and interior finishes. Further energy-efficient choices were made with the integration of ERCO, Coolon and Ligman products. Coordination with LLIGHT ensured lighting in shared areas such as foyers and end-of-trip facilities felt unified and intentional.
Through thoughtful specification and tailored design, the lighting became an integral part of Darling Quarter’s sustainability vision, enhancing comfort, supporting energy performance, and reinforcing the precinct’s forward-focused design approach.
