City Recital Hall in Sydney’s Angel Place has recently undergone a significant renewal led by architects Archer Office, marking the first major upgrade to the venue since it opened in 1999. The transformation brings a refreshed sense of arrival and movement throughout the foyers, bars, auditorium and backstage areas, giving the building greater flexibility to host a wider variety of events. The architectural upgrades celebrate the existing character of the hall while introducing new layers of comfort, connection and performance readiness.
The lighting design by JHA plays a central role in shaping the atmosphere and experience of the renewed spaces. It enhances both the architectural form and the technical needs of the venue, balancing visual warmth with precision. The design allows light to guide visitors from public foyers to performance spaces with subtle shifts in tone and intensity, creating a calm and cohesive experience that responds beautifully to the new material palette.
We were proud to support JHA by supplying a premium selection of luminaires that helped bring their design to life. The ERCO Atrium Double Focus delivers powerful yet refined illumination suiting the high ceilings and large volumes, offering exceptional visual comfort and precise control. The ERCO IKU wall wash provides smooth vertical lighting that enhances the rich architectural surfaces and adds depth to the spatial composition.
ELS Flex 70 downlights offer flexibility, high colour rendering and excellent glare control while the ELS Nightfall linear downlight introduces a softer layer of illumination that enriches the bar area. ELS SystemKanal 40 continues this sense of refinement, allowing continuous runs of linear lighting that integrate seamlessly with the architecture and maintain a cohesive visual rhythm throughout the venues amenities areas.
Together, these elements form a lighting scheme that is elegant, adaptable and technically precise. The combination of products and design intent ensures that City Recital Hall remains a world class venue, one that now feels both contemporary and timeless. The renewed lighting enhances the experience of performers and audiences alike, celebrating the artistry of both the architecture and the performance within.
